From 4-H to Quilting: My Crafting Journey Through the Years
Crafting has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It started when I was just seven years old, joining 4-H and learning to sew garments. Since then, my love for creating has grown and evolved, weaving through different crafts like cross stitching, macrame, and eventually quilting. Five years ago, expecting my first grandchild, I began making quilts—a new chapter in my crafting story. This post shares my journey, the lessons I’ve learned, and the joy that crafting continues to bring me.
My Story
I grew up on a farm where there was always an abundance of chores. Being the youngest of six children, we were a dedicated 4-H family. At seven years old, I was finally old enough to join 4-H, a youth organization centered on hands-on learning. My first project involved sewing garments. I still remember the excitement of choosing fabric, threading the needle, and transforming a simple piece of cloth into something wearable. The structure of 4-H instilled in me patience and precision, skills that laid the foundation for all my future crafts.Making garments wasn’t just about sewing; it was about problem-solving. I learned to read patterns, measure accurately, and fix mistakes. These early experiences gave me confidence and a sense of accomplishment. I also discovered how satisfying it is to create something useful with my own hands.
As I grew older, my interests expanded beyond sewing garments. I found joy in cross stitching, a craft that required focus and attention to detail. The repetitive motion of stitching tiny X’s on fabric was calming, almost meditative. I created patterns ranging from simple flowers to intricate landscapes, each piece telling its own story. My favorite items were Christmas ornaments.Macrame came next, introducing me to the world of knots and textures. Making plant hangers, wall decorations, purses and gave me a new way to express creativity. The tactile nature of macrame was different from sewing or stitching but equally rewarding. It taught me about structure and design in three dimensions. These crafts complemented each other well. Cross stitching improved my patience and precision, while macrame enhanced my understanding of form and space. Together, they enriched my crafting skills and kept my creative spirit alive.

Discovering Quilting with a New Purpose
Five years ago, everything changed when I found out I was expecting my first grandchild. I wanted to create something special, a keepsake that would carry love and warmth through generations. That’s when I started quilting.
Quilting combined many of the skills I had developed over the years. It involved sewing, pattern design, and color coordination. But it also brought new challenges, like layering fabrics and stitching them together to create a durable, beautiful piece. My first quilt was a labor of love. I chose soft fabrics in gentle colors, carefully cut each piece, and stitched them together with care. The process was slow but deeply satisfying. When I finished, I felt a profound connection to my grandchild, knowing this quilt would be a part of their life. Now I have 4 grandchildren and they all have quilts made by Grammie, most of them more than one!

The Joy of Quilting Today
Quilting has become a central part of my crafting life. I now make quilts not only for family & friends but for sale. Each quilt carries a story, a memory, and a piece of my heart. I have my own long arm machine & carry several fabric lines that I know others will love. My favorite annual event to attend if Garden of Quilts in Utah. Hundreds of quilts are showcased in the stunning gardens. I have attended as an observer, an exhibitor, and as a class/event participant. Regardless of my role seeing the variation of design & techniques are truly inspiring!
